Pack with a Plan, Play with Confidence
A little preparation can make match day less stressful. Packing the night before gives you time to check your equipment, confirm team arrangements and spot anything that needs replacing. Use this checklist as a starting point, then adapt it to your role, playing level, conditions and competition rules.
1. Batting Equipment
- Cricket bat suited to your playing preferences and the match format.
- Batting gloves in good condition.
- Batting pads that fit securely and allow comfortable movement.
- Bat grip and any permitted bat-care items you normally use.
Inspect your bat for cracks or other damage and check that the grip feels secure. If you notice a concern, ask a qualified coach or bat-care professional for advice before using it.
For help comparing bat sizes, weight, profiles and handles, read our cricket bat buying guide.
2. Protective Equipment
- Helmet that fits correctly and meets the requirements of your competition.
- Abdominal guard and suitable support garment, where applicable.
- Thigh, arm or other guards required for your role and preferences.
- Wicket-keeping gloves and pads if you are keeping wicket.
Check protective equipment before leaving. Do not use damaged gear, and follow the manufacturer’s fit and care instructions. Confirm any competition-specific requirements with your coach or officials.
For more detailed guidance on selecting and caring for protective equipment, see our cricket protective gear guide.
3. Clothing and Footwear
- Match clothing that meets team and competition requirements.
- Training or warm-up layer appropriate for the forecast.
- Cricket shoes suitable for the playing surface.
- Spare socks and a change of clothing for after the match.
- Cap, sun protection or a rain layer when appropriate.
Check the weather and venue guidance before packing. Make sure footwear is in good condition and appropriate for the surface you will play on.
4. Ball and Practice Accessories
Depending on your team’s arrangements, you may need practice balls, a personal training accessory or other approved equipment for warm-up. Match balls are usually managed by the team or officials, so confirm responsibilities in advance rather than assuming every player should bring one.
Only pack equipment that is permitted for the session or competition, and coordinate shared items with your captain or coach.
5. Hydration and Personal Essentials
- Water bottle or other drinks permitted by your venue.
- Snacks suitable for your own match-day routine.
- Personal medication, if applicable, managed according to your usual instructions.
- Towel, tissues and basic personal-care items.
- Phone, travel details and any required team or venue information.
Follow your team’s guidance on food, drink and breaks. Check venue rules for what can be brought into the ground.
6. Use Your Kit Bag Efficiently
Pack heavier items so they are stable and easy to carry, and keep smaller accessories in a dedicated compartment or pouch. Store clean clothing separately from used gear when possible. Make sure sharp-edged or bulky items are secured safely and that the bag closes without forcing it.
Choose a bag with enough room for your equipment and a carrying style that suits your travel to training and matches. Our cricket kit bag buying guide explains what to consider when comparing trolley, duffel and duffel wheelie styles.
7. Final Checks Before You Leave
- Confirm match time, venue, transport and arrival time with your team.
- Check your bat, gloves, pads, helmet and footwear.
- Make sure clothing and personal items are packed.
- Review the weather and any venue instructions.
- Check team messages for last-minute changes.
- Label your belongings where appropriate.
After the Match
Before leaving the venue, collect all your equipment and check shared areas. Separate damp clothing from clean items, and let equipment dry naturally before storing it. Clean and inspect your gear according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and make a note of anything that needs repair or replacement before the next session.
